This month Small Black Box presents three widly different sound artists at different stages of their sound making careers. Our debutant Idiots Avante plugs his guitar into upto 20 effects pedals before not touching it. Justice Yeldham & The Dynamic Ribbon Device has recently returned from a world tour where he played and smashed numerous amplified sheets of glass. Browning Mummery is Australia's quiet pioneer of electronic and experimental music, producing fascinating sound works for over 20 years.

JUSTICE YELDHAM & THE DYNAMIC RIBBON DEVICE
"Where Christain Marclay finishes Lucas Abela begins". Lucas has achieved alot and little since he first began performing on homemade turntable contraptions on a live to air on radio show skid row 88.9fm. This began ten years of the widest interpretation of turntablism ranging from simple multi-stylus setups played on high-powered overhead motors while trampolining to fights in crowded room with styli swords. His work with cartridges led him to an oral performance fixation first with skewers and garden tools and more recently leaving the cartridges behind instead choosing grand piano contacts mics to amplify sheets of glass which he plays with his face. The show, Justice Yeldham & The Dynamic Ribbon Device has been on the road since November 7th 2003. Lucas is also founder of the dualpLOVER family of businesses, which he currently runs with Swerve his label partner. They also run a consolidation point for CD manufacturer and distribute new musics in and around Sydney. http://www.dualplover.com

BROWNING MUMMERY
Andrew Lonsdale, who is responsible for the Browning Mummery sound, began producing electronic and experimental music (EM) in Rockhampton in 1980. After relocating to Sydney in 1981, he became part of the early industrial/experimental music scene, releasing several cassettes and performing as Boxmusik, ISMism (a collective experiment), and Atomic Disease (with visual artist Nigel Gurney). Browning Mummery began in 1983, to be one of the original acts released by the early 'Extreme' cassette label, and appeared on compilations including the legendary "Lunakhod" cassette album (1984), with Severed Heads and others. Diehards may remember Browning Mummery?s fantastic double set at SBB#3 in July 2001.

IDIOTS AVANTE
Beginning as experiments with effects pedals, it has grown into a large-scale exploration of organic sound. Pieces are primarily guitar based, though it might be hard to tell. Harmonicas, contact mics, gallon drums and a mysterious box covered in switches are also used. The resulting creations take in everything from ambience to harsh noise. This entire chaotic concept is orchestrated by Nick Smethurst. Comparisons have ranged from Brian Eno to Jim O'Rourke to the Durutti Column. But it would be preferred if you'd make your own.
